About Base12

We love ideas

Base12 gets its name from the “base” concept in mathematics that is used to define the fundamental parts of a number system. It is a reference to the importance of the foundations you start with, and how important they are to supporting your efforts moving forward.

We have seen what it takes to put an innovative idea into practice first-hand, and it is not easy. Success requires focus as well as flexibility, and some tough decisions about how to apply resources.

At the same time, making adjustments on the fly shouldn’t mean you lose anything you’ve already built. We work with our clients to build a solid foundation for telling their story, and coordinate with a network of experts that can deliver outstanding, and lasting, impacts.

Base12 has worked with developers of new technologies in climate technology, regenerative agriculture, synthetic biology, medicine, biofuels, transportation and more. We’ve helped NGOs put revolutionary policy proposals into the public discussion, reach new audiences and then maintain hard-earned leadership. We’ve supported trade groups that are building entirely new industries, educating policymakers, and organizing go-to events for the leaders of their sector. We’ve helped startups get on the map, and then prove they on a path to success.

We are passionate about the ideas that are building the future, and every plan is custom-built for to meet the needs of each client.

Leadership

Nate Kommers started Base12 after more than two decades working in communications, public relations, and sustainability policy.

A native of Montana, Nate began his career after graduate school at Georgetown University, where he studied how new technologies are changing the media, and how people are influenced by new ways of sharing information.

He applied this expertise working with communications staff on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies in Washington, DC, as well as non-profit organizations such as the Center for Public Integrity, a respected investigative journalism group, and the World Resources Institute (WRI), a global sustainability think tank.

He then moved to Seattle to manage communications at Sightline Institute, the leading sustainability think tank in the Northwest. In 2011 he began working as a public relations consultant, working with startup companies and investors seeking to deploy new solutions in climate technology, synthetic biology, regenerative agriculture, and more.

His career has taken him from Bozeman, Montana, to Washington, DC, to Seattle, and back to Bozeman where is raising two kids and keeping up on his skiing.
